Media expert Marshall McLuhan once said, "We don't know who discovered water, but we know it wasn't the fish." In much the same way, Americans use a lot of casual language (slang, idioms, vulgarity, etc.) without realizing it. You will be able to interact with others better if you understand some key words and phrases.
Watching films is still one of the best ways to learn about American language and usage, but there are few useful films showing in theaters at any one time that will help you. If you have a television and a VCR, you can rent tapes from video stores and watch them at your own pace. It can also help if you watch films with American friends who can explain the terms to you. Here is a list of films we recommend for learning how people talk in America.
