Public Transit

Subways and buses and trains, oh my! Depending on where you attend school in the U.S., you may have very little access to public transit or you may find that it is the most efficient method of getting around.

No matter where you go to school, one of your biggest needs will be getting where you need to go. If you own a car, you may find that you don't need much else, but not everyone can afford to drive, so they have to look for other options. Most cities and college towns that are large enough to make walking impractical offer some form of public transit.

If you decide to use public transit, gather all of the schedule information you can for the area in which you live and all areas to which you will need to travel regularly (Note: schedules change regularly, usually every three months, so be sure you have the latest information). Familiarize yourself with the prices for each trip and any restrictions that may apply for certain trips, and make certain that any time you go out you have enough money to cover all of your travel needs.

Passes

Special pre-paid passes are usually available for people who take buses or trains regularly, and these can provide riders with significant savings. If you have to take a bus or train on a regular basis, then you should consider buying a pass.

Transfers

Transit systems can be a great way to get around, but they won't usually get you directly from where you are starting out to where you are going. You may need to switch buses or trains, or you may need to switch from one type of transit to the other. If you think you may need to take more than one bus or train to get where you are going, find out about transfers. Usually bus drivers can issue a pass to you when you pay your fare; all you have to do is ask for a transfer. Similarly, some train tickets can be used for local bus service near your destination.

Safety

While riding the bus or train can be convenient, it can also be dangerous. You shouldn't have any problems if you follow a few simply guidelines:

  • Don't travel at night unless it is absolutely necessary.
  • Have your exact fare or your pass ready when you arrive at the bus or train station, that way you won't have to take out your wallet or open your purse.
  • Know the areas where you will be getting on and off.
  • Stay aware of your surroundings.
