Scholarships for International Students

Recently, we've found some scholarship opportunities for which international students are eligible. As far as we have been able to determine, none of these scholarships are restricted to U.S. citizens - as you know, financial aid can be hard to come by, so don't let these opportunities go to waste!

  • Spencer Foundation Dissertation Fellowships
Awards: Approximately 30 fellowships of $20,000 will be awarded.
Eligibility: Applicants need not be United States citizens but must be candidates for the doctoral degree in any field of study at a graduate school in the United States. Dissertation topics must concern education and all pre-dissertation requirements must be completed by June 1, 2003.

  • The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans

  • Margaret McNamara Memorial Fund
This great program hands out six awards of around $11,000 each every year to women from developing countries who intend to work to improve conditions for women and children in their home countries. You must be attending an accredited U.S. college, and plan to use the grant to help pay for that education. Green card holders are not eligible, nor are those under 25 years of age. For more details, additional requirements, and an application, please contact MMMF directly:

  • PEO-IPS Sisterhood International Grant
This is a scholarship of up to $5,000 designed to allow women from other countries to pursue graduate study in the US and Canada. This award is for women only. Graduate and post-graduate students are available. Applicants must promise to return to their home countries and pursue a professional career. These is no online contact, so either write them at:

    Or fax: 515-255-3820

  • Datatel Scholars Foundation
Datatel is offering multiple scholarships through four programs. Award amounts vary from $700 to $5000. You apply through your school, which must be a participating institution (it probably is). The schools must submit the applications they select by February 15, so you will need to get your application in to your school's financial aid office before then. Full information, lists of participating schools, application forms and more are available at the Datatel Scholars Foundation's website.

  • The American Society of Civil Engineers
If you're studying civil engineering, you should know that ASCE is offering a variety of scholarships and fellowships. These are offered to ASCE members only - which is a good reason to join.

  • The Charles Babbage Institute
The Babbage Institute is offering a scholarship of over $10,000 to graduate students interested in the history of computing.

  • The World Bank
The World Bank has some funds available for withdrawl, if your field is economic development. The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program supports graduate study. Applicants who already hold a degree from an industrialized country are ineligible. The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program supports postgraduate research. Its deadline will probably fall in August.

  • Phi Beta Kappa
PBK is offering its $20,000 Mary Isabel Sibley Fellowship to single women intending to pursue postgraduate research in the humanities. The deadline will probably be January 15, but contact them for current information.
