Were the Village People right when they sang, "It's fun to stay at the YMCA"?

Temporary Housing

If you arrive in the United States without having made arrangements for short-term housing, don't worry. You have options:

Local Hotels and Motels
Check local hotels and motels for weekly rates. These rates will vary depending on location but expect to pay around $300-400 per week (or around $50 per night). Weekly rates are generally cheaper than paying day by day. Hotels and motels will accept drop-in guests, but if you will arrive in the United States during peak travel seasons (such as holidays), it is wise to reserve a room in advance, because they will fill up fast in some areas.

The following hotel and motel chains offer affordable rates and reasonable quality. Click on the links below to find a suitable place to stay and to make reservations:

  • Motel 6 offers reliable quality, at very affordable prices. In some locations, it also offers studio rooms with kitchens for extended stays.
  • Best Western
  • offers good rooms with reasonable rates. Since it's the world's largest hotel chain, you can probably find one close to your school.
  • Super 8 Motels has more than 1,900 motels across the U.S. and Canada. Their rates are also affordable.

Homestay Programs
Homestay programs
may be available on a short-term basis. Contact your school or international student association for more information.

Rooms for Rent
Check bulletin boards on campus for rooms that are available for rent. This could lead to long-term housing.

The YMCA and YWCA - The "Y"
The Young Men's and Young Women's Christian Associations are long-standing and well-respected community service organizations. Though founded by Christian groups, they are non-denominational organizations these days. They provide many services, such as neighborhood athletic programs. They also provide short-term housing. The rooms are modest at best, but they provide you with place to rest temporarily. The YMCA and YWCA are not recommended for use on a long-term basis.

  • Rooms are available on a month-to-month basis.
  • Rates start at $300 per month and vary by location.
  • Limited to certain locations, so check to see if there is one nearby. There are locator pages for both the YMCA and the YWCA.
