Homestay Programs
Have you ever considered living with an American family in their home?
Schools sometimes offer homestay programs, and in these programs, you do just that.
The cost usually runs from $500 to $700 per month, and
the contract period may be for a semester, or for a year. If you are interested,
contact your school for placement information. But first, consider the "pros" and "cons".
The Benefits of a Homestay Program:
- The environment will probably be relaxing and quiet.
- You will learn a lot about American culture.
- Your host family will have lots of advice about surviving in the U.S.
- It's the perfect way to improve your English.
- You might become good friends.
- Host families sometimes provide transportation.
- Food might be included.
The Drawbacks of a Homestay Program:
- It might cost too much.
- It could be far from campus, in which case you would need transportation.
- There may be rules, such as a curfew, noise restrictions, no overnight guests, etc.
- You might not be compatible with your host family.
